The girl on the right is Anne Frank, and the girl on the left is her sister, Margot. Both of them died in the Holocaust approximately 5 years later. Anne died one day after her big sister.

Every time I see this picture, I think, “oh, that’s Anne Frank standing there”.
Then I see the girl lying down and think “oh, wait, *that’s* Anne Frank…some strong genes in that family”.
And then I get sad because I remember who I’m talking about and how neither Anne nor Margot got to grow up.

I love this picture because this is the only beach in the world that I’ve ever been to and I didn’t know this picture existed until many years later. I stayed in Zandvoort in 1994 for the Haarlem cup international soccer tournament and we kicked a ball around on the beach some where near this location.

Back before an American president would call Nazis “fine people” and declare that being against fascism is illegal in the United States.

Her sister’s swimsuit was rather skimpy for its time, no?

More like old-school depressing. Those poor children and all the other innocents whose lives were cut cruelly short.
