During the Spanish Civil War, Franco promoted a narrative of Catholic–Muslim unity against the “godless atheism” of the Republicans; he also led a narrative of brotherhood and equality between Spaniards and Moroccans. In fact, the October 1942 issue of Foreign Affairs went so far as to say of Francoist commanders, “They never denied that they had promised white women to the Moors when they entered Madrid.”
Republicans countered this with the “Moorish hordes” narrative, alleging that Franco’s army was filled with “Muslim rapists.”The first poster on the top right reads, “Spanish women in Fascist regions give birth to Black babies!” and “The Spain Franco wants!”The second one reads “Invasion,” with images of Moorish soldiers.”¡Ay Carmela!”, a popular song among the Republicans, includes the line, “Luchamos contra los Moros” (We struggle against the Moors).

Friendly reminder that the Spanish Civil War was the only war were the same side claimed both a Crusade and a Yihad… and not even just that, but they also claimed a king named Carlos.

Franco refused to bring up the reconquista out of respect for the North African soldiers in his army

Franco’s ceremonial guard (the Moorish Guard) were Rifians. This is because, during his years in the Rif War, he gained a reputation for divine luck among the locals, which they called “baraka,” because despite receiving mortal wounds, he always survived. I suppose Franco kept them close for the rest of his life because he considered them reliable and a good propaganda tool to demonstrate that even the Moors were with him

Welp, Queipo de Llano, one of Franco’s top generals, was bragging about how the Africans were going to rape Republican women so “they’ll know a real man for once”.
