Canada has had this forever, along with pictures on the actual packages showing people dying or organs with cancer. They’re gross to look at lol! Which I guess is the point.

    2. Unfortunately I don’t think this would work very well on my friends. “Shortens your life” would probably be considered a selling point.

    3. Cigarettes can take years off your life.

But those years are shit anyway as you piss yourself trying to get out of a chair.

Smoke, drink, enjoy yourself while you can.

Life is full of flavours – take big bites!

    4. Same in nz, has been like this for years, just missing the butt fortune cookies.

The trick is to get two packs with the eye surgery and the mouth and then hold them over your face so you can do the classic gag.

As a former smoker that thinks nobody should smoke. Cmon, let the mf smoke at that point. Between common sense, the commercials, the outside packaging, you think they don’t know what they’re doing at that point?

    6. Aussie here.

This has been escalating for years, with plain packaging, and bigger warnings alongside regular price hikes. A cheap 20 pack of cigarettes went from being (an already high) $15AUD to now being about $40, the highest prices in the world, by far.

As such, in the last few years we have developed a thriving, open and uncontrolled black market. In my small suburb there used to be 1 tobacconist, now there are 3, and they’re all price fixing together so they can share business. Cigarettes are $10 a pack and falling. All from OS, no warnings. They haven’t been this cheap in 25 years or more. Economists are writing snarky articles about how idiotic prohibition policy just still doesn’t work. Lol.

On a less lol note, we used to have regulation around self-extinguishing cigarette butts to help prevent bushfires. Our black market tobacco doesn’t have those. So well done, pollies – increase the bushfire risk too. Fuckers.

Australian cigarettes are now largely black market asian cigarettes. SOurced by the triads to the arab crime families who have forcibly taken over tobacconist shops and those who dont hand over their business get fire bombed.

They control the vape sales as well as so many people switched over and nicotine vapes are illegal.

Its bigger than the drug market. We are talking a multi multi billion dollar trade. Theres 4 tobaconists on my main strip up the road.

No one buys genuine legal smokes anymore.

Tax worked wonders on ciggies . Up to a point the govt was raking in billions of dollars in tax but it crossed a threshold and the black market came into effect.

I pay 10 aud for a pack of smokes if i wanted one.

And of course. Big tobacco lobbied heavily in regards to allowing vapes. Most people vape compared to smoke as cigs are basically taboo now. And the medical advisers didnt want to hear a single thing about legalising vapes.

They made vapes fully illegal but u can see cops walking around vaping.

    8. They are doing everything they can to prevent smoking.

Nothing works unless you really want to quit.

    9. Same thing in Canada. I get my smokes from the rez though, they dont have them. Support local

    10. Who in 2025 is still smoking and doesn’t already know it’s bad for you? Who is this messaging for?

    11. How common are vapes/nicotine salt pouches over there?

I don’t know anyone my age who smokes here in the USA (mid 20s) but the majority of people I know either vape or use nic pouches

this is going to make some slob’s front walk even more depressing as he continues tossing his butts out while he porch sits

Dying with COPD is brutal and the end of life is terrible and you basically drown in the fluid on your lungs until you end up in hospice and die. Watched loved ones go down that path. Its horrible horrible horrible.

Also, the ink to print those warnings are also toxic. So im not sure thats the best thing to do.

Pulls out Aussie cigarette and reads

“Cigarettes only look cool when you’re handsome, and you’re not handsome. The reason your ex chose the other guy was not cause he smoked but cause he actually looked better than you and had a purpose in life. Go to the gym, don’t smoke”

    15. Ironmasked-Kraken on

This type of shit had me spite smoking for years.

Just leave smokers alone. They know it sucks and unhealthy but goddamn it they need that little break from whatever is happening. It’s either this or murder

This type of messaging works. They have quantified metrics to support it.

It’s why many other countries are following suit.

    17. MagicOrpheus310 on

Completely unless as barely anyone still buys “legit” packs these days when “bootleg” are $10 a pack and are literally everywhere now

    18. Non-smoker here but this is too far. Everyone knows they are bad that smokes them. This isn’t going to help. It’s overreach.

    19. at this point, if your going to put this much regulatory requirements on a product, just outlaw them.

    20. By the time you take away all the brand packaging and the warning labels are on the part you put in your mouth I think Australia should just out right ban it.

    21. Oh hey we have that in Quebec (french part of Canada) too! I dont know about the rest of Canada tho
