In 1520, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I (the Magnificent) received a 15 year old Ruthenian slave as his concubine. Her birth name was never recorded, but she became known as Hurrem Sultan in Turkey and as Roxelana in the West.

Suleiman soon fell madly in love with her, broke up with his other concubines and made her his legal life, breaking the old Ottoman custom of having just slaves. Hurrem, on the other hand, became the most powerful woman in the Ottoman Empire and one of the most powerful women in the world, participating in charity works and Ottoman negotiations with foreign realms – especially her native Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

    1. The Turk soap “Magnificent Century” is based on this. Meryem Uzerli plays a smokin’ Hurrem.
