      No idea how common it is, but the tribes of Papua New Guinea have been known to troll and play jokes on visitors, sometimes to the point of making them hard to study.

      Think this is less of a joke, and more putting on a show, though. Like, it’s a real part of their culture, so not made up, but they indulge in it on this occation because it’s a hit with visitors. That kinda thing.

    2. Well, I’ll be damned, this is a real thing. Apparently, it was nothing like this video until 1957 when tribal members decided to enter a fair (they won for tribal finery) and it seems like the lore had been beefed up since then. At least, according to their Wikipedia page which didn’t seem particularly robustly researched

    3. Didn’t the Hopi native americans also have mudheads? Or Navajo–I can’t remember my southwest arts & culture class!
