“For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.”
– Sir Raymond Priestly, Antarctic Explorer and Geologist.
Shackleton’s 1914 to 1917 expedition may not have achieved its goal. After Endurance was crushed, the men drifted on the ice for more than nine months before reaching land, then spent over four and a half months stranded on Elephant Island. Shackleton took men took the tiny James Caird and spent fourteen days at sea to reach South Georgia, and every man survived.
A human survival story like no other.
