Pizza King restaurants have a phone at every table to order your food, instead of a server taking your order.

      I think McDonald’s did this once, it saved something like 5c per order/per item as they used offshore staff

    2. Well, I guess it’s better than the “use our app to order, just scan this QR code” option.

    3. I say this all the time;

      I do not understand why every restaurant and café, no matter how “posh”, doesn’t just have a tablet embedded in the table.

      Sure, have a button for “we’d like waitress service” if you like but otherwise… how much time is wasted pissing about taking orders and walking back and forth when I could just send a ticket direct to the kitchen as and when I need stuff, split the bill by whatever patterns it offers (e.g. “fair split among X people”, “person A had this, person B had that so split it accordingly”, “let Bob pay for his own on the company card”, etc. etc.), let me see what “specials” are available, what ingredients/allergens are in everything, what’s “not on” tonight, let us order and then the late-comers can add to it, see how long your particular meal is going to take, etc. etc. etc.

      The only part that a human needs be involved in is walking it to the table.

      McDonald’s got this. They understand it, but even they do it wrong. I don’t want to walk up to a kiosk, or order on a mobile app… that could just a tablet in the table. Which they ALREADY HAVE quite often for the kids anyway.

      It’s 2025 and I still just think that if I was ever starting a restaurant or café, I would START with that system from day one.

      There used to be bars with a phone at every table with a number suspended above. The premise was that you could call women at the attractive table and avoid being rejected face to face.

      they had a concept sonic in dallas when i was growing up that wasn’t a drive through and had phones like this at booths to place orders, middle schoolers could not handle the power

      A&w used to do this too. Back in the 80s. Remember as a kid using it and looking over the booth to see them answer it in the kitchen area. Was cool.

    7. This reminds me of a Sonic where I live. It didn’t last long. It was located in a strip mall and it was a different restaurant that had closed.

      A Sonic opened up in its place and you used a phone to place your order and I can’t remember if you had to pick up your order or if they brought it to you. But it was always slow poor service and it didn’t last long. Now it’s something else. I think one of those healthy meal prep places.

      There was a place in my hometown (upper Midwest) in the early 80s that you walked in, picked up a phone and placed your order and someone brought it out to you. There was no seating, carry out only. I think they served barbecue or fried chicken, I can’t remember the name of it.
