A ribbon worm’s attack is a unique hunting and defence mechanism where it rapidly shoots out a retractable, tube-shaped organ called a **proboscis**. This organ can be used to ensnare prey with sticky mucus, stab it with a harpoon-like stylet to inject toxins and digestive enzymes, or be used defensively to deter predators. Some species also produce a potent neurotoxin, such as tetrodotoxin.
