This is why most modern tanks are fitted with active armor. It stops the metal shell from penetrating the hard metal shell and the explosion happens away from the core.

This is HESH, but is not very effective against the spaced armor on modern tanks. APFSDS is the most effective tank buster nowadays, a tungsten rod going at mach 5 to smash through the armor.

New tank rounds use an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) to invert a metal cone and turn it into a super hot liquid pencil (basically).
Tanks today have armor equivalent to feet of steel plate so the hot jet of metal is one of the few things that can penetrate (in addition to tungsten or depleted uranium rods)
