    1. For context about the meme:

A far-right association and political party called “Le Parti de la France,” which includes the well-known Alexandre Hinger, organized a mass in honor of Pétain. They protested after it was banned, claiming that Freemasons were to blame. These are the same people who argue that Pétain “saved the Jews.”

Pétain is too often associated with being the hero of Verdun. Although his management of the troops and his defensive strategy helped prevent French defeat, it was actually Nivelle who took the offensive and managed to reclaim lost ground, making him a crucial figure in the victory at Verdun. However, his career was overshadowed by the failure of the Chemin des Dames offensive in 1917, leading the high command to highlight Pétain’s name instead in order to restore the army’s image.

We also tend to forget Castelnau, the forerunner who had prepared the defenses and prevented disaster in the early stages, yet he too was sidelined.
