Context: In a lot of pop culture adaptations of Stevenson’s novel, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, a lot of it portrays Dr Jekyll tragically. As if Mr. Hyde and him are a different person, where the Jekyll is forcibly taken over by his evil split personality and he is unaware of his actions as Hyde and innocent.
Well, no. That’s not how it actually what was in the story.
In the book, Mr. Hyde and Jekyll are one person. Mr. Hyde isn’t some evil split personality that takes over the innocent Dr Jekyll after he drunk his potion. **He is Jekyll**. As in he is the “base urges” within Jekyll. The potion just simply changes his appearance and brings out those urges. He is basically Jekyll’s incognito mode. A mask. A person he uses to go be a menace to Victorian society. And Jekyll is fully aware of everything he is doing as Hyde. He just doesn’t care in that state until it comes to effect his normal life, like murdering that guy on the street.
So, no. Jekyll isn’t some innocent victim that gets taken over by a split personality. He and Hyde are the same.

Mr. Hyde is the name of the doctor, not the monster

Dr.Jekyll was basically a sociopath who only keep his urge in check because he afraid for his social standing. The medicine he took give him a new identify to do what he wanted without the fear of consequences.
