The Danish Schleswig party just got the most votes for the commune "Tønder", which is at the very southern border at Germany. And on the other side the SSW (South Schleswig Voters' Association), who also represent danes just of the minority group in South Schleswig, managed to keep their miraculous single seat in the Bundestag in 2025.

    1. >miraculous single seat

There isn’t much “miraculous” about that seat in the Bundestag. Following the Bonn-Copenhagen declarations of 1955, the SSW was exempted from the 5% electoral threshold for both state and federal elections. This means that if the SSW chooses to run for a seat, which they always do for state elections and sometimes for federal elections, they will also very likely get that seat.

Therefore, the SSW’s ability to obtain a seat in the Bundestag is not a recent development resulting from a strengthened Danish minority, it has been possible for many decades now. Furthermore, the SSW is increasingly becoming a regional Schleswig-Holstein party that also tries to get votes from people with no connection to the Frisian or Danish minority.

      Greetings from Schleswig-Holstein!
