Fun fact: there’s not such thing as “alpha wolf” in nature, this term was created after observation of wolves in captivity, which behaved differently than free wolves.
Also: it was actually taken from description of social structure of chicken.
Anyone who unironically use “alpha” “beta” etc. to describe their social structures is really akin to imprisoned chicken.

Given the number of conscripts in the World Wars, proportionally speaking, our volunteer militaries today are probably even crazier, once you account for the factors for why someone would join.

Everybody thinks their in the winning team until they’re told to stand in line with the guy from the other political spectrum.
Then you realise that you’ve been played by your leadership just like they did to your forefathers.
Fat, skinny, sick, healthy, old, young. There’s never enough bodies to throw between the leaders and consequences for their actions.

Leaving the picture aside, it’s exactly because the Americans *weren’t* “alpha” warriors that they were so heroic and disheartening to their enemies. They were a bunch of clerks and schoolteachers and women who learned how to man planes and tanks and destroyers and assembly lines, and used them to inexorably beat the sh*t out of *two* would-be elite warrior empires.
