    1. The crushing of the Hungarian Revolution was also the origin of the (mainly British) term “tankie”, to indicate a leftist who is too authoritarian and/or willing to defend atrocities committed in the name of socialism.

      In the literal sense, a “tankie” was someone who approved of the Soviet Union’s sending in the tanks to Hungary (and, later, Czechoslovakia).
