Lusotropicalism is an idea developed in the 1930's by Brazilian politician Gilberto Freyre, stating Portuguese colonialism is better than other forms of colonialism because it's nicer towards natives and more willing to integrate them. At first, Portuguese dictator Salazar and his administration opposed the idea and stuck to the old colonialist concept of educating the inferior cultures. However after meeting Freyre in 1951, Salazar changed his mind and declared Portugal no longer has colonies, rather it is one multicontinental state (which aligned with Lusotropical ideas). He also enabled every native born in the former colonies to gain citizenship. However not much actually changed, as very few natives really attained citizenship, and Portuguese citizenship didn't grant many rights anyway at the time. Racism and race based segregation were still very much a thing.

Haha nails it without context history memes can feel like trying to read ancient hieroglyphics with no Rosetta Stone
Colonialism lore always reads like someone arguing with themselves in a mirror.
I love how colonists thought they were nice, because thay wanted to civilise and integrate natives. The very things the natives didn’t want.Â
Didn’t Brazil gain independence in 1822?
