      The fact that these uniforms are referred to as “whites” led to a funny moment for me one time. I was living in NYC, and it was Fleet Week so there were a lot of sailors about.

      I was standing on the subway platform minding my own business when I heard a voice say, “Man, I hate whites!” and I was concerned that some kind of race violence was about to occur, glanced over my shoulder and to my relief it was two sailors, in whites, and one was complaining to the other about how he dislikes that particular uniform.
