I studied abroad in Brazil. One of my first days there, there was a crowd gathered around a couple kids at a bus stop. They were playing drums and tambourine, singing and rapping and it was really cool.
My gringo ass was smiling all big and clapping along and when we got on the bus my Brazilian friend came up to me and said dude (cara), I’m so sorry about that. I said… what?
They’d been singing about me. They were singing “this dude (cara) is gonna get robbed. This dude is gonna get roooobbed” and the whole crowd had been laughing. At *me*, and I had no idea. I just danced along like an idiot.
For a couple minutes I was about as mortified and embarrassed as I’ve ever been in life and then I figured, eh fuck it, this is how we learn. -jokes on them rascals (moleques), I never got mugged pickpocketed.
I did once get sort-of-arrested once by police for smoking weed on the beach. They drove me to an atm and gave me the opportunity to pay my fine right then and there. $200 US but it was worth it to not spend the night in a Brazilian jail, get deported and fail my classes.
