yes it costs more than one cent to make a penny. but pennies are “spent” many thousands of times in their lifetime. making their cost negligible to their purpose.

A few years ago Vsauce presented a custom made 2027 penny in a video and said that “this is currently a novelty item, however in 2027 it will just be a normal counterfeit penny”. Well that penny will now always be special, since there will be no 2027 pennies.
