    1. Joseph Bonaparte was the older brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, and one of his first supporters. He was instrumental in the overthrow of the Directory and the installation of Napoleon as the eventual Emperor of the French. After the war of the Third Coalition, Joseph was installed by his brother as King of Naples and Sicily. However, only two years later, Joseph was replaced as King by Joachim Murat and Napoleon appointed him instead as King of Spain and the Indies. After the defeat of France in the war of the Sixth Coalition, Joseph abdicated the throne of Spain and fled Europe for the United States. He settled in Bordentown, New Jersey where he would live until 1832.

Allegedly, while hunting in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Joseph spotted strange tracks which led him to a monstrous creature, which hissed at him before taking flight into the woods. Joseph told this story to others in New Jersey, who told him he had spotted the legendary Jersey Devil. Bonaparte allegedly searched for the Devil multiple times after the fact, but he never saw it again.
