Hot take and I’ll surely be downvoted to oblivion for this, but I’m gonna play the “vet card” here say this is bad but not for the reason people think it is.
Al Shara is being used to legitimize Trump, not the other way around. He did really bad things when he was with AQI when I was in Iraq fighting against them. That being said, his time in Camp Bucca seems to have done the implausible-it reformed him. He didn’t go on to join ISIS (yes, Al Nusra was also bad) and since they toppled the Assad regime, he has been doing all the right things, including some unexpectedly good things. People thought he was going to be a Turkish puppet, but his fair dealings with the Kurds suggest otherwise. If anything, my concern is that Trump wants to entice him to **stop** doing good things in Syria at the behest of Putin or Erdogan or both.

Not saying he is a good guy cos he obvs is absolutely not, but let’s not exaggerate what isn’t true to make a more clickbait story.
The Al-Nusra Front absolutely committed war crimes and executions but there’s no evidence they beheaded people like Al Qaeda / ISIS.
I get many may not be familiar with the intricacies of Middle Eastern / Central Asian politics and extremist groups but he didn’t ‘lead Al Qaeda’ either.

The Syrian president has completely disavowed Al-Qaeda and his militant past and he has saved his country from a ruthless dictator. He is a changed man and I give him all the credit in the world. And in his position he can serve as a important ally in the Middle East not just for the United States but for the entire West. I can’t stand Trump but I have zero issues with him meeting and making friends with the new Syrian president. It’s a game changer.
