There is a rationale to doing a deal if you think they’ll never blink, no matter how bad it gets. Tag them as being uninterested in helping ordinary Americans, then minimise the further harm of the shut down.
At a certain point the damage being done is greater than the reward of keeping things shut down. I don’t think it’s there yet but I think that point does exist and anything at that point can be seen as selling out / giving up but there may be a tactically correct time to do it.
Seeing themselves in the Sisyphean task between a rock and a hard place of getting the GOP to capitulate, those Dem’s that capitulated basically allowed the rock to roll back down all over themselves.
