This whole “viking society was perfect because I like viking aesthetic” is the adult version of “pirates never take another person’s property”

Like, yeah, the pirate raider pillagers famous for violence against the unarmed and defenseless totally never did rape, it’s just all coastal women threw themselves at them with no regards for the risk of pregnancy with a guy they’ll never see again (if they’re lucky).

    2. I think the criticized meme tried just to counter the stereotype of a barbaric and uncivilized ~~Viking~~ Nordic culture…

The word viking comes from vikingr which essentially meant pirates/raiders and yes those people did a lot of raping and murdering and stealing.

But far more early medieval Scandinavians were fishermen, hunters, farmers, shepherds, craftsmen. I do believe these are the people the original post was referring to.

Another interesting case on women, the Mongols. It was perfectly normal for a Mongol warrior to kidnap a woman from a rival tribe as his wife. But if he died she just took over whatever standing and role he had in life.

That’s were the “Viking women” part comes in. Norse women had a lot of rights and were generally very respected in Norse society (unless they were slaves, but then they weren’t treated poorly for being women, but for being slaves. Sure, they were probably mistreated in different ways from male slaves, but they weren’t mistreated *because* they were women). The foreign women who were kidnapped and turned into slaves and concubines did not.

    7. This is sounds like what the Dawah guys say in where islam conquered in certain region of women’s had right like this.

    8. The fact that even modern militaries of just about every Country included ‘developed’ has a history of problem with rape right up until the current Century, Decade and Year which is overtly ignored makes it easier to see how there are apologists who choose not to see it in Vikings etc

It helps us to realise that it actually isn’t some unique quirk of pre-Ikea Scandis. It becomes a serious issue with culture that desensitizes to war and violence, even with fancy technology and codes of conduct

    9. Tbf,

Most memes here as massive inaccurate, especially when it’s weebs for Japan or Viking lovers.
