I understand this was some sort of social-media inspired “trend” this year, but I just don’t understand why small kids would actually want the potatoes instead of candy.

I wonder how many potatoes ended up stuffed into the exhaust pipes of nearby parked cars…

I put out a huge bowl of red potatoes and they were also gone first. The tweens went crazy for them, it’s the absurdity they love. Anyone saying 6-7 will absolutely go for a potato over a full-size candy bar.

People would be complaining but I love potatoes, there’s so many ways to eat them ðŸ˜

About half the kids who got potatoes from me believed that they could easily turn it into french fries.

You must get a ton of trick-or-treaters! Last year I bought lots of candy and go basically no ToTers, so this year I ended up just buying a big box of Halloween Rice Krispie Treats on the theory that I’d eat whatever was left. Luckily this year I did get a few dozen kids, but I’m still set for snacks for a while though!

Someone gave out potatoes in our neighborhood and they were a big hit

In this economy, if I can just go around and collect bits of groceries instead of candy I would be the happiest man in the world. A can of food here, a potato there, maybe even a ziplock bag of rice.

We gave out potatoes last year, and didn’t this year. Multiple kids ran up asking for a potato this year.

I saw the post about Ramen for trick-or-treat and was trying to remember the other “real food” I last heard was trending for treats … it was definitely potatoes!

When I was in middle/high school, I loved making myself a baked potato in the microwave after school. Poke holes, nuke for 5 minutes, turn, nuke for another 5 minutes and voila! Genuinely such a good Halloween idea. I would have been so psyched to see this as a kid!

One year we were running out of candy due to getting way more trick or treaters than usual, so we threw in gummy snacks, granola bars, mini packs of ritz, just any random snack stuff we had on hand and that stuff got picked way more than the full size candy bars.
I think it was the novelty factor but it’s really just a guess.

Kids don’t care about candy, they care about fun. You gave them a story to tell. That’s better than any Snickers

Yep. When I finally live somewhere I’ll get trick or treaters, I’ll be doing this. They love the ridiculousness of it.

I had a bowl of candy and a bowl of 3d printed ghosts. I was quite surprised that the ghosts were more popular than the candy. A lot of kids were so interested in the ghosts they ignored the candy, despite me telling them they could take both.
