For the first 2 seconds people were in frame I thought they were squirrels with giant engorged sacks climbing up a normal sized tree. Funny, but, also just gives a frame of reference of how big the trees are.
The enormity of this tree is awe inspiring. Just crazy to think how much history this tree lived through.

Hope they remembered to account for tree growth for the descent or they’ll be short ~10ft of rope

Vids/pics don’t do these trees justice. They’re unreal in person. Feels like you’re on another planet. Just absurdly massive in comparison to every other tree.

If it’s unhealthy da fook do they do? The tree fertilizer stick for that baby must be the size of my house (coincidently small as shit)

Maybe they should’ve sent someone up who knows how to climb. That SRT ascent looks like someone who’s just learning. Not even using foot ascenders…. But that’s just me being jealous that they gave this job to a couple researchers instead of myself

not damaging but touching the bark but aren’t they tugging some branch violently as they worm and shake their way up?? isn’t that like worse than just straddling the bark to go up??

“Health checkup” my ass. These guys just wanted to climb a badass tree. I’m an arborist (a jealous one) and can guarantee you can get ALL the data you would need with a drone.

I heard a fascinating interview with some researchers who were taking DNA samples at various points up the trunk right up to the crown.
Sequencing shows the amount of mutation that has happened to the DNA over time because they are so old and new growth is only at the top.
The crown is very very different genetically than the base.

Sorry, rope technique nerding here. There are several techniques for rope ascending and you don’t see that style everyday.

This music is from the movie last of the mohicans. I still have this soundtrack on cd! I haven’t listened to it in 30+ years but I love it.
