Just nine years, no big deal

    1. I don’t understand how people believe such blatant lies.

If I just declared that the sun rises and falls by my will, would y’all start giving me stuff?

I once did a hunger strike for 2 weeks. Most people don’t believe I didn’t actually eat any food for 14 days (it was 13 and a half technically).

But somehow most of those same people would easily believe stories like this. Sensibility is long dead, don’t bother looking for it, you’ll be disappointed.

    3. “Prophet.” What did this dude prophesize?

Also, two weeks. That’s how long we can not eat before dying.

    4. I think during Ramadan and one of the Jewish holidays, fasting means no food or drink from sunrise to sunset. Nine years is still a questionable claim, but potentially possible in this context.

    5. I mean, most of the world is religious and believe these sorts of things can happen so this is just a criticism of all religion.

It’s actually weirder to act like these sorts of people are *especially* stupid, because then you need to explain why it’s normal to believe in all the mysticism of any particular religion while also not believing in any miracles happening nowadays.

Author George Saunders writes great nonfiction as well; his piece “The Incredible Buddha Boy” is about a similar attention seeker.

    7. Maybe he was on that show my 1,000 lb life or something. Had so much reserve he can go another year np apparently

    8. I’m from a Buddhist country, you can fast for a very long time but only when you’re constantly meditating, like a hermit monk deep in the mountains and waterfalls. Ain’t no way someone who’s been fasting for 9 years would appear in a social event with red carpet like this.
