    1. The basements of the older buildings of my college in NYC have these signs still around too.

    2. It’s not uncommon at all. Pretty much any public / government building built during the cold war have these.

When I was a kid, I kind of wondered what would have happened if too many people showed up. I mean, was there a guy in an air raid warden helmet standing there with a clipboard and shutting the door when person #105 scrambled in?

    4. I’m curious if they use it as a public storm shelter during Tornado Warnings? I know that a lot of houses in OK don’t have their own shelters. Same with the schools, which seems like a crime to me.

    5. My elementary school had one of these signs. The “shelter” was the boiler room. Stuffing a dozen adults in there would have been uncomfortable.

    6. They are far more common than most people think. I live in Minnesota and know of around a dozen buildings in the area with these shelters. I’ve been in a few of them as part of a previous job.

How crazy to see a mention of this tiny town. I started going to Little Sahara in 1984 when there was even less there. It was a lot of fun back then but I’ve heard the dunes are flattened now. The big dunes in those days were pretty great. I’ve got a scar on my upper lip and blown up nostril from that place.

    8. We had these on my elementary school in NYC in the 1980s. I still remember the drills, hiding under our desks or lining up in the hallways and facing the stone walls.
