Americans can be terribly naive, and I believe we just assumed rhat people in the highest levels of power would conduct themselves with (at least some) honor. Even now, despite evidence of endless corruption, I’m surrounded by people who simply can’t believe that it’s true.

Because a massive percentage of us aren’t “honest and hardworking”. They’d fuck over their neighbor, slack off 24/7, and lie to your face about it if they thought they could get away with it – they’re just afraid of the potential consequences.

Repeated trauma bonding and coercive authoritarian policies to create a loyal in group that will support power and endure any hardship as long as it will negatively impact the outgroup. Any disloyalty is cause for shunning from the rest of the in group who slowly is cut off from anything resembling reality through isolation and rejection from out groups. Eventually thoughts are washed clean and the will fades.
Having blackmail on everyone in one’s circle also helps, but not required.
