A castle being owned by the same family for over 800 years…

My roof is 15 years old and I feel the encroaching doom. Never claim there aren’t levels to this shit.

    2. Are we certain that it hasn’t just been the same couple people changing their identities every so often?

I am a distant descendant. At one stage it looked like my grandmother was in line but clearly not.

It is so well situated that it was was only forced to surrender in the 14th century and tear down its walls. The dungeon is intact and it has an excellent collection of artwork and medieval arms.

    4. Strictly speaking, most of what you see is not medieval, but was built between the 15th and 17th centuries, and restored several times since then (especially after a bad fire in 1920)

But it’s certainly a lot more historically authentic than 19th century romantic follies like Neuschwanstein and Burg Hohenzollern.

What’s more interesting is that it just casually houses a sculpture of what looks like a well dressed man shitting coins (or cookies?).

    6. Burg Eltz. Very cool. Been there 2 times. Once with our German friends and when we had family come out to visit us. It was amazing both times.

    7. Our 10 doors down neighbors have been old and retired in 1994.

Now it’s 2025 and one of them still is old and retired.

I think one of them must have been exposed to sunlight because it’s gone now

I’ve been in the area multiple times.

The whole Eiffel region, where the castle is located, is very beautiful. Lots of hills, rivers and other castles.

If you’re into hiking, it is nice to go from Burg Pyrmont, which also looks very nice, to Burg Eltz and down to Moselkern by the river. It is a 15km hike.

There have got to be DEEP Secrets in those walls. 33 fuckin’ generations? How many generations of servants from neighboring villages? Some big nasties, I’m *just sayin’.*

    10. 800 years for 33 generations? That means, this family gets children by the age of 24 on avarage. As the Germans would say – Sehr fleißig.

    11. I went here with my mom when I was about 10. I met a couple German boys there and they had figured out that the ice cream vending machine was left unlocked, so we plundered it hahaha. Good trip.

Well, they didn’t build castles to sell them to some random family, did they?

    13. Our local monarchy lays claim to not just a castle but *all* the land in the whole nation (‘Crown’s superior interest’), including a range of castles and their line of succession goes back for over 1000 years…

And to put that in perspective, one of my local pubs has been in business since 1360.
