This is the mugshot of Carl Braden. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for buying a home in his name, in place of his friend (a veteran), because the real estate broker refused to sell to Negroes (1954).

Here are the details: The “authorities” interpreted his actions as a purposeful attempt to “incite racial violence”. Housing discrimination was illegal, but the assumption was that he was fully aware that the segregationist members of the all white community would react violently (which they did) when he deeded the house to a negro family, so they charged him with sedition. After serving around 7 months of his sentence he was bailed out and then his conviction was overturned.

This is way back 1954 so surely nothing like that would happen today, you would think?
Well I know someone who did this in Northern Ireland much more recently. The seller was a bigot and refused to sell the house to a Catholic and even banned viewings by Catholics. My friend really wanted to buy this house (a fine property the type of which rarely came on the market) and he asked a friend, an Indian immigrant who had become a successful local businessman to buy the house and then transfer to him. His indian friend was happy to help.
He got the house.
The bigoted Protestant was livid.
But think about it.. he would rather sell the house to a Hindu immigrant than to a local person with a slightly different version of Christianity to him. Process that for a minute. Mind boggling.

it’s cool that OP is highlighting Carl Braden here, but there is so much more about him, and his wife Anne, than just this one incident. they were important and vocal activists during the civil rights era.

Another white person who did the right thing and suffered; there are others too. Ever wonder why people like this aren’t household names??? It’s interesting how these folks were “lost” to history. It’s more like written out.

Didn’t Carl Braden attempt to falsely detonate a black persons house? He’s also a communist as-well
