Probably tournament pieces. Tournaments would be like big sporting events, and the armorers and squires were like an F1 team – they would want to create a winning suit of armor, but also something that makes the king stand out and provides entertainment value as well.
The famous Anglo Saxon helmet has a little moustache on it as well.
