There’s a walkway like that near my house. It has two sets of barriers meant to make it hard for a bike to push around right? except there’s nothing stopping you from just riding around it. It is right by a railroad track tho so I suspect it’s to try to make people more aware of the tracks but idk

It makes it obvious to cars that this isn’t a road they can use. It also opens so that maintenance personnel can drive their trucks in without mucking up the grass.

very common in safer areas. building an entire chain link fence around the parking lot would cost like 10x as much, and you’d need to spend much more to maintain it.
if you basically trust the people in your community, the gate by itself is generally sufficient. if you don’t, you have bigger problems.
