I can’t even fathom the purpose. Surely this thing can’t be that useful. This might be too interesting to me to be mildly interesting.

    2. We have a couple of these at my work. They open for a sliding metal door that serves as a barrier in the event of a fire.

Edit: As u/[Lancearon](https://www.reddit.com/user/Lancearon/) pointed out, this one isn’t a fire wall, as it doesn’t go to the ceiling. I suspect u/boxofsquirrels is correct, that it’s most likely a pull out fence/barrier to close off access to certain parts of the building.

My previous house had a closet like that. The original owner was a cop and that was his gun closet. It had a locking door knob to keep it secure.

We had a door like that in the auditorium of my high school. If you opened the door, a large partition on a roof mounted rail would be able to be pulled out to bisect the auditorium. It was fairly heavy from what I remember, took me and my buddy yanking on it to get it to move. Might be something like that?

Dad has one of these in his kitchen. Wild that I remember being able to crawl in it when I was a little kid because as an adult I can barely fit my shoulder in there to get the broom out.

Most pf the time i see these installed its for a hidden sliding wall to partition a room.

    7. I can just hear the carpentry crew now, who have to waste most of a 3′ solid core door just to cut one that’s what, 8″ wide?, to fit that stupid opening.

    8. So I think this is a riser closet. They more commonly are larger but I have seen a few like this at the university I work at in older smaller multistory buildings.

A riser closet is a room where wire, pipe or other building infastructure is passed from one floor to another. The closet must be fire rated. Its a special room that has many of its own requirements.

I’m an electrician that’s worked on a lot of old schools. These have usually been wire and pipe chases. These are common for example in between the boys’ and girls’ restrooms and have all the toilet piping going through them

    10. For when you’re just a little tiny bit gay but don’t want anyone to know. Be you.🌈❤️

Probably for a folding gate. My school had these. Tell tale sign is that there’ll be anchor points in the wall opposite.
