The lawnmower is probably 5-10 years old, so this is cumulative damage over multiple seasons, but that large missing chunk happened within the first couple years – I’m assuming the squirrels dragged it away to their nest to continue munching on it.
All of those divots you see around the steering wheel are bite marks, so the whole thing is going to break apart at some point.
They’ve eaten parts of the cupholder and a faceplate as well, lol.

Do you think the squirrels see it as an enemy and recognize that the steering wheel is an essential component of its function?

When I lived in Quebec there was a roadhouse that when it snowed in most people would arrive on snowmobiles. One day as we were leaving all the plastic seats of the snowmobiles had been eaten by a bear.

I would suspect rats – not the bushy-tailed rat, e.g., a squirrel – but a brown or black rat, particularly if the mower is kept in a garage or shed.

Did your parents never think, “Maybe I should find a way to cover the wheel to prevent this from happening”?
Even just a sprinkle of cayenne pepper may be enough of a deterrent. That keeps squirrels from digging in my potted flowers.

They really should replace it, the left anchor is barely attached and if they are making a turn solely gripping the left part it could potentially just completely snap off.

If that still drives it’s a miracle. Usually they start with the most important wires before they get that far

Someone should tell the squirrels about microplastics

I guess I’m glad we have a pecan tree to “guard” our lawnmower.

Maybe try feeding them something other than your steering wheel. 😂

Why would you make a steering wheel from such a tasty, nutty material?

Couldn’t you just buy a new steering wheel? Or did they mess up other stuff like wiring?
