Archbishop Damaskinos Papandreou was the archbishop of Athens during the nazi occupation. He openly criticized the nazi occupation for deporting the Greek Jews. The local SS leader threatened to have him shot if he didn't rescind the letter. The bishop refused and further worked with local police and priests to forge thousands of false baptismal documents for thousands of Greek Jews and hiding others who it was impossible to get false documents. For his work saving Greek Jews during the Holocaust, he was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
