Don’t blame Julius and Augustus. January and February were the months that were added and messed things up. Julius and Augustus got there months by co-opting quintiles and sextilis.

I hate that almost all the comments are wrong, yes the Romans did add two more months, but it was January and February, not July and August(these were just renaming other months). They were also originally stuck on at the end making February the last month of the year. The change in which month was first came way later.

May and June used to be called Quintillis and Sextillis in the old roman calendar before July and August were added to the calendar. September October November and December were the seventh eighth ninth and tenth months at that time when they were named.

The actual reason is that the start of the year just sort of shifted, beforehand March was the first month of the year which works since it was also the start of spring
