Context: Dmitri Shostakovich was a very famous Russian composer, who was very much not a fan of Stalin and was almost purged. A lot of his music is widely agreed upon to contain subtle criticisms(sneak disses, if you will) of Joseph Stalin(may he rest in piss). His music was also known to contain criticisms of the Tsars, another thing that is dead and the world is a better place for it.
(You should listen to the Dover Quartet’s performance of Shostakovich’s string quartet No.8. It’s on YouTube)

Man his 9th symphony is so funny. Since Beethoven made his 9th every composer was intimidated to make more than 8 because it was regarded as such an achievement.
Stalin wanted his 9th to be the music of the red army’s triumph after the war and Shostakovich did… Well. You have to listen to it yourself. Imagine an intimidating parade showcasing the strength of the red army and this playing. It’s so funny to me I always laugh listening to it.
