Between 1808-1867 the British Empire used the Royal Navy to end the Atlantic slave trade. They freed over one hundred and fifty thousand African slaves, at the cost of thousands of sailors and marines.
God Save the King, and bless the men of the Royal Navy and Marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice to end one of the world’s greatest evils.

“British historians write almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it.”
– quote by Eric Eustace Williams, a scholar on the practice of slavery and the first Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago after it achieved independence from the UK
Not saying that the British stopping their *direct* slave trade wasn’t obviously a good thing, of course.
