I think it’s interesting that for 3 years, none of them ever said “hey guys, I think she’s not serious about finishing that shroud”

I don’t it’s heavily implied they tried/did rape her and tried to kill her son.

Fuck the suitors, they had it coming. It’s the maidservants you should feel sorry for.

They harassed a married woman for 3 years and planned on murdering her son and raping her. They absolutely had it coming

    6. Huh? The same guys that were conspiring to rape Penelope and kill Telemachus? Those guys? Yeah, no; don’t feel sorry for them

They abused xenia, a big no no in ancient Greece. I believe there was one decent guy, and Odysseus even gave him an out, but he refused and died.

Should note that one of the suitors, Amphinomus, was actually considered the most well-behaved out of all the suitors. He twice convinced his fellow suitors not to kill Telemachus, and when Odysseus showed up in disguise, treated him with courtesy and kindness unlike the others. In gratitude, Odysseus advised him to gtfo so that he wouldn’t die, but Athena had already determined that he would share the same fate as the other suitors, and during the ensuing massacre, he was killed by Telemachus, but not Odysseus.

    9. They all deserved it. They spat on hospitality rules and repeatedly tried to murder Telemachus. And I didn’t even mention all the rape.

    10. The Homeric poems are meant to impart moral lessons, and Greeks of the classical age read them that way. The suitors committed a serious violation of *xenia*, the reciprocal duties of hosts and their guests, which is one of the biggest no-nos in antique Greek culture. Their punishment *had* to be draconian, because *xenia* is that important.

The only one who I feel sorry for is Amphinomous.

He didn’t deserve to die alongside the rest of them, he seemed like a good guy (especially compared to the rest of the suitors)

    12. They tried to kill her son and pillaged their house… they got what tgey deserved. Its the maids you should feel bad for

I feel sad for his dog, who lived long enough to recognize his return, but he couldn’t acknowledge for fear of outing himself.

As I recall, they could have just stood down and said “Oh shit, you’re alive? Our bad, we’ll see ourselves out.” They CHOSE to fight Odysseus, so they kinda had it coming.
