I’m lost. Is the implication that the parents were to blame for child labor?

This just seems like an awful take to me. Taking something or someone who’s objectively doing it worse than you do as an example to justify yourself, and saying “at least I’m not like this person or doing this thing” is about the worst case of whataboutism I can think ok.
Maybe the author of the post meant something different and I’m getting it all wrong though.

I can’t imagine how smacked I would’ve been smoking a pipe at 6 years old; when I actually figured out how to inhale, a *cigarette* nearly put me in my ass at 15
