Leaving aside this pathetic attempt to measure your dicks using the imperialist past of nations that no longer exist (yes, the British Empire no longer exists… get over it)…

In the 1900 this meme would be written in French, a Romance language, 1500 years after the western Roman Empire (and the death of the Latin language). After the fall of the western Roman Empire the eastern Roman Empire gradually changed their language to Greek

Third opinion: There is no such thing as a “great” Empire, all Empires are by their very nature immoral, as they expand their borders through war, tend to have rather authoritarian systems of government and tend to end up collapsing in the same violent way in which they existed, causing great suffering to both it’s inhabitants and the people conquered by them. Blessed will be the day when Empires cease to exist (if that day ever comes), because we are definitely not there, and we won’t be there anytime soon, but that would truly be “great.”
With that said, the Spanish Empire is the greatest Empire ever, because I’m Spanish! /s

I do feel like the British empire is underrated due to the fact that I don’t see nearly as many memes about it as I do Rome, but as many have pointed out modern Britain probably wouldn’t have existed without Rome in the first place

Because *American* media became so massively dominant starting in the 1920s, just as mass media technologies (film, radio, later TV) became widespread.
English was nowhere near being *the* global language during Britain’s imperial period, ironically it only became so after its decline.

“Empire” from the latin “imperium”. “Exist” from the latin “existere”. Only “great” is a germanic word.

English use the latin alphabet, is heavely influenced by the french, use roman law and etc
And of course, 900 millions of people have a romance language as their native tongue(versus the 380millions native english speakers)

Idk, man, this seems like a really flimsy argument. Rome lasted way longer than the British Empire, its lasting influence is still felt all over Europe, the world’s largest religion is Roman Catholism, we write using the Latin alphabet, we use a modification of the Julian Calendar. China has a claim at best empire of all time but Rome is clearly in the running.
