The distinction seems needlessly pedantic. If there’s a an abundance of prey overall, but but a decrease in availability to the subject in question then I think it’s fair to say there is a decrease in abundance.
If we’re talking about the populations of the Faroe islands and I was to say “there’s a lack of abundance Frenchmen” I think that would be a fair statement and doesn’t need some one saying…”Well actually it’s a matter of availability” because there are tons of them in France.
