He was invited by the head of the WH Correspondents Association. The guy who invited him then admitted he’d never watched Colbert.
For Colbert’s part, he didn’t really understand what he was getting into. He thought this was supposed to be some kind of roast and just went with it.

TBF if you show a couple clips of Colbert Report without context or prior knowledge of Stephen Colbert, you’d plausibly think he’s a conservative. He’s just that good at impersonating the vibe.

My uncle thinks Colbert is a conservative. At least he did a few years ago until I told him he wasn’t.
