Codex Testeriano Bodmer, a 16th-century Mexican catechism created by Christian missionaries. The book was made to evangelize the indigenous population by using pictographic script, a writing system they were familiar with.Housed at the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny, Switzerland.[1256×1936]
The book was used to teach Catholic prayers and doctrine, such as the Ave Maria and the Credo, to Native peoples. The pictograms acted as a bridge to communicate a new religious message using a familiar visual language.
