In 1784 Venezualian priests requested that the pope allow them to eat Capybara during Lent on the grounds that it is a semi-aquatic mammal with webbed feet, and that the rule was actually about land/sky animals vs water animals rather than beast and bird vs fish as is more traditionally said. The Pope agreed. Otter and Beaver had been previously allowed under the same logic. Technically the claim isn’t that they are fish is an exaggeration but it fit’s the format better.

    2. lol, reminds me of how biblical rabbits “chew the cud” and are therefore not food, but in reality they eat their own shit, and are legitimate food as far as Leviticus goes.

I believe the whole no meat during lent rule was meant to be a form of sacrifice, since meat can be seen as a delicacy.
