That’s a horsehair worm (Nematomorpha). Starts in water bugs eaten by mantises, then hijacks the mantis’s brain to make it seek water and drown. Worm pops out to mate. The Worm not fleeing, it craves water to finish the cycle. Zombie parasite!

The horsehair worm grows inside the mantis, consuming its organs, and then secretes a protein that takes over the mantis’s nervous system.
Behavioral Control:
The worm directs the mantis to a body of water, where it then jumps in, allowing the worm to break free and reproduce.
Host’s Inability to Survive:
The mantis cannot survive the process of the worm leaving, and dipping it in water to “help” the worm exit is equivalent to drowning.
