An Original Edo Period Woodblock depicting the Kami Fumi-E. The image is that of a decapitated Christian, and woodblock prints from this were printed throughout the 18th century onwards as anti-Christian propaganda to deter worshippers or would be worshippers in Japan [675×821]

    1. Unfortunately this is not an item I can state to have acquired this time, as the price proved too much for my budget at the time. It was part of an interesting estate sale from a Japan historian who specialized on the history of the Kakure Kirishitans and their persecution by the Shogunate. I was how able to acquire several other pieces, which I will share in due time.

I need to stress the fact that this is in no way a political statement I am trying to make on the topic of Christian martyrdom, but rather an item I had firm historical interest in at today’s sale, as I am a specialist focused on religious books, manuscripts, art, and in this case, artifacts.
