This superbly carved marble showcases the extraordinary skill of the Milanese sculptor Giovanni Spertini. Entitled Fanciulla che scrive, the model was exhibited at the Accademia di Brera in Milan in 1867, and later shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1878. The life-size marble, of which the present statuette is a reduction, is preserved in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan.

Giovanni Spertini studied at the Brera Academy under Benzoni, Labus and Magni. Specialising in genre subjects, he exhibited internationally, including in Munich (1869), Paris (1878) and Dublin (1865).
