Built in the 16th century AD during the reign of Abbas the Great, it was part of 999 caravanserais constructed to support trade and travel along the Silk Road. What makes Zein-o-din remarkable is its circular shape. Out of the hundreds of caravanserais built in Iran, this is the only completely circular one in the country, and Asia. The caravanserai is made of brick and features watchtowers, inner chambers, and central courtyards typical of Persian caravanserai architecture.
Today, Zein-o-din Caravanserai functions as a traditional inn. Guests can stay in the vaulted rooms once used by traders, enjoy Persian cuisine, and experience the desert nights much as travelers did centuries ago. Since the roof is open, guests can also see the stars at night. Its blend of history, architecture, and hospitality makes it a popular destination for visitors exploring Yazd and the Silk Road heritage. Zein-o-din, alongside 54 of other caravanserais in Iran, were inscribed, in 2023, as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site called “The Persian Caravanserai”:
That empty lot across the road would be a metal detectorist’s dream.

Oh to have been here at its peak and heyday. Where East and West met together.
How many languages would you hear around you? What different kinds of food to sample?
The different smells of spices and perfumes wafting around the place.
The assortment of coins, precious stones, and metals.
Then of course all variety of trade goods.
The friendships made and deals brokered.
Oh to have been here back in the day.

If you had shown me the first pic only and told me to geo-guess, I would have said southern europe, something in the old inner city. Maybe I would have clocked the specific arches and gotten somewhere with arabic influence (which still leaves great swathes of Tomato-Europe.
I would have been certain of it being in the city though. Not a place that looks like a default map without loaded assets.
It’s beautiful and I pity the crew that had to build it.
EDIT: Thinking about construction, how to get materials there? As a horse I would probably complain about hostile work environment and I don’t think I ever saw a camel-drawn waggon? Are those a thing?
