This pair of handmade, bespoke button boots reflects the infusion of erotically charged references in women’s dress that emerged
at the end of the 19th century. These boots were designed to look like a stockinged leg in a shoe. Although the majority of the calf-hugging shaft and elaborate gold kid appliqué would have
been hidden under their wearer’s skirt, any glimpse would have tantalized the onlooker. They were likely intended to be displayed or worn by someone seeking to make a statement. From [Bata Shoe Museum](https://www.instagram.com/p/DB65Cditw2-/#)

Damn these are gorgeous! Beautiful condition! I’d totally buy and wear these now if they were sold. I wonder if the velvet was originally pale blue, or if it’s supposed to be grey?
Also in the late 1800s skirts were pretty long. Even recognising that like lingerie, some things can just be meant to be enjoyed by the wearer (or a select few), it seems a shame such beautiful boots wouldn’t have shown much.
