[Lizzie Magie – Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lizzie_Magie) was the author of it with 2 sets of rules one to show how monopolies happen and another to highlight how better society would be if economic policies were different. It would become a popular game among the quakers along the northeast USA where home created versions would use local names for the properties instead. Eventually it makes its way to Atlantic City where Charles Darrow would make some changes and get a patent on it claiming it as his own invention with the name of Monopoly leading to the version we know today. PBS has a great show which goes through the history.
